WM: Competitive swim racing?

But if you take it slow, they come along,” Karen Simpson, swim instructor said. “The adult learned to swim is broken into 12 steps, some people need to do 12, some need to do eight, some need to do four. So you make an initial assessment and break into groups and structures and take that group so that they're pretty much matched up and we go from there. And it's basically to build up a comfort level,” Paul Landes, swim instructor said.

When I first started as editor in June, her son, James, stopped by the office and told me his mother was turning 100 this summer and that she’d make an excellent story. Charlotte Sanddal, 100, wears several of her gold medals from Senior Olympics around the world (Charlie Denison/The Monitor). The Masters are hoping to host another adult learn to swim this fall. In their latest adult learn to swim class, all five participants passed their swim test. Growing up in the 1920s, there were no opportunities for women to participate in organized sport. Her first time being able to compete in a sport- and against other women was when she was 72.

Slotted to play three festivals across three states in just three days, it was bound to be a hectic weekend for up-and-coming pop star Charlotte Sands. Add in extreme weather, a canceled flight, and a fourteen hour drive from Kentucky to Boston and one could fairly say that the odds were stacked against the Massachusetts native. Unfazed by any of these roadblocks, though, Sands opened up day two of Boston Calling with an electrifying set, showing off her stellar vocals and snappy songwriting. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the industry, Jason earned a remarkable 5th place ranking nationwide in AdvisorHub's Top 100 Solo Advisors for 2023. This accolade highlights his outstanding achievements in areas such as Growth, Professionalism, and Scope of Service.

“I started when I retired at 73,” Sanddal said in a video provided by the Huntsman World Senior Games. Last week I interviewed Tracy Grilli, age 65, and this week I took five (questions) with Charlotte Sanddal, age 99. It’s natural to compare how your swimmer progresses relative to their peers, but it’s best just to focus on personal improvement with so many factors at play.

The eighth annual Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day event was held Wednesday, and this year there was extra significance attached to the ceremonies. Another memorable occurrence was when a tornado struck the area in April 1945, causing a base-wide power outage, just before they learned of President Franklin Roosevelt’s death. And although she’s sure that she “finished last” among those five, her proclivity in the water resurfaced five decades later. A century ago, just two years after women earned the right to vote in 1920, the U.S. Supreme Courts rebuffed Leser vs. Garnett, a challenge to strike down the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.

She trained and served in Norman, Oklahoma as a machinist’s mate, helping to build and repair Navy planes. She wore her Navy uniform (which she always said was much more stylish than the Army’s women’s service!) for the last time at a veteran’s memorial service last year and it fit like a glove. Jim put his forestry degree to use in Utah, however, he didn’t stay with that profession long. Jim switched to psychology and, in 1960, took a job in Boulder at the Montana State Training School.

We'll help you find the right words to comfort your family member or loved one during this difficult time. And when asked what her secret to a long life has been, she chalked it up to her love of the pool, and a lifelong strict no-tobacco policy. Sanddal figures that her longevity has been closely tied to picking up swimming, an activity that is as challenging as it is therapeutic.

After the Navy, Charlotte went to college, earning a master’s degree in social work. The Sanddals came to Montana in 1960, when James was hired as the director of the Training School in Boulder. They adopted four children, while Charlotte worked for the state of Montana (DPHHS) in nursing homes. She retired at the age of 72, and took up swimming at the urging of her friend, Flora Wong. Christina graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania at age 19 with a Bachelor of Science in Economics. She completed both high school and college in three years each.

Charlotte set records in multiple swim events over 30 years, including at least three national/international swim records in the 100–105-year-old age category just last year. The Ridley members are a right group and really became Charlotte’s second family. After a long and healthy life, a series of health setbacks afflicted Charlotte in her last year and meant the heartbreaking end of her swim career. But she continued to cheer on her teammates, and they have been a constant source of support and comfort to her.
